BIG Player

Evolver Review

Car music app BigPlayer offers up three big, simple buttons for play, fast forward, and rewind. Other than some other niceties described below, that’s about it.

The advantage: there are no fancy swiping gestures to remember. The disadvantage: You might need to look at the phone every once in a while, because even though the app is locked in Portrait orientation, there’s not much space between those buttons.

Big Player ($1.19) also won us over with its newfound ability, as of the last version, to let you navigate your iPhone’s music library using big buttons, giving you a fighting chance of driving safely while selecting new tunes, although we recommend filling its queue before you shift into Drive. To do that, you can browse your iPhone’s music library by artist, album, song, audiobook, genre, podcast, composer, compilation, or playlist, adding entire screens or individual songs.

The app makes it easy to switch between the songs you have added to the queue, even while driving, using the big menu.

Meanwhile, to select new songs while driving or at a stoplight, you can scroll up and down an oversized alphabetical keypad to search your iPhone’s music library by playlist, artist, song, or album (we recommend sticking with just one, for obvious safety reasons).

Overall, Big Player’s clean interface and easy operation make it rather easy to recommend if you prefer a car music app with buttons rather than gestures. Many competing apps cost slightly less, but this cleverly-designed interface is worth the extra 20 cents (especially when your choice in car music app could save your life). review by Eliot Van Buskirk

Listen Big, Play Big

"The Big Player application is an enormous step forward from the traditional iPod music player, providing user convenience and minimising time to operate. The ease of use reduces distraction time, which is critically important for driving safely during in-car use. I intend to implement Big Player into my EDay electric vehicles as a driver convenience and a safety feature!"

Big Player is a music player designed specifically for use in vehicles and for those who want an alternative to the iPod. It was designed by automotive engineers who specialise in Interaction Design and reducing Driver Distraction. The most used functions are readily accessible, with a "one-glance" design philosophy, and visual cues are used to make music selection as easy as possible. Scrolling through a large music library is made easy with a quick alphabet selector within a visually attractive interface. A detailed "Help" is provided and simple left and right swipes provide access to more functions. Listen Big, Play Big.

NOTE: This is not an FM Transmitter. In vehicle music should be played via your Bluetooth/FM transmitter/Auxiliary input (not provided). BIG Player recommends using a mount or dock within your car to make using your music collection safer without having to hold your phone. See your local driving laws for clarification.

BIG Player is regularly updated to reflect safer and more efficient ways of using your music player so feel free to send feature requests and support emails.

As a commitment to reducing the impact of driver distraction, Curve Tomorrow is contributing 20 cents per download to the Murdoch Children Research Institute (MCRI) to support childhood traumatic brain injury research.

NOTE: If you play a playlist in another music program, like the iPod app, then the Current Playing Songs will not be updated to reflect your selection. This is our design limitation due to what Apple allow us to do.
